Home-cooked Meal at a Taiwanese's Home

Hello everyone! Aren't you guys curious what a local Taiwanese family eats at home?

Because I watch too much Anthony Bourdain's No Reservation every single night, when I went to Taipei I wanted to do the exact thing he does on his every travel. I specifically requested to Auntie Christine that I would like to experience the culture of Taiwan by sampling home cooked food at a local's house.

What can be more authentic than that?!

So, on our 5th day an aunt ( not actually a relative but a family friend ) invited us to her beautiful home. She made these following dishes from scratch for me to try :

She made about 60 pieces of these.. and she expected me to eat half of them!

CUCUMBER W/ WOOD EAR MUSHROOM

A very refreshing appetizer.

POTATO W/ BLACK PEPPERCORN and PARSLEY

SLICED BOILED DUCK

RICE NOODLES WITH CARROTS AND SHRIMPS

My most favorite dish aside from the dumplings.

KUCHAY ( CHIVES ) and PORK DUMPLINGS

Tasted super fresh and Auntie said she only put a little amount of pork in this. The dumplings were extremely healthy and not fattening at all.

We all had fresh pomegranate PASSION FRUIT juice to wash all the delicious home cooked meal down.

Have A Lovely Day!

  1. Hi, I think the yellow juice is passion fruits juice. Pomegranate should be red, I think.

    3. WOW! Really? Did I give Shilin and Ximending justice in my posts or did I write a lot of crap? :D If I stay in Taiwan for that long, I think I'll be huge just after a few months. The food there is really awesome!

    4. No, no, you described them really well! If you have the chance, you should visit Raohe night market next time (I like the food there better than Shilin), and it's near the Wu Fen Pu clothes market. Wu Fen Pu is a wholesale area where most of the night market clothes in TW are sourced from there. It's actually a whole district, not just a closed market.

  2. Do they eat with newspaper as their table cloth? Is this common practice there?

    1. You notice details Anon! To answer your question yes they do use newspapers or sometimes big thin sheets of plastics to cover their tables but in this case, we ate at the office part of the house so i guess the auntie didnt bother to use place mats and just used the normal paper to cover the table just in case someone drips something.

  3. Food looks really light and healthy!! *you know what I mean* lolz...BTW, I think they should filter out the seed before serving because it'll be difficult to sip unless you are using a straw..hehe..I wonder how you drank them without gulping down the seeds..hehe..~

    1. Yup yup! Haha you are so good! That was the first time I drank fresh passion fruits with seed ( i usually drink the concentrated kind ) so after my first gulp, I started to take out the seeds on my own because I couldn't really chew them. When the hostess saw me doing that, she said the seeds were edible but she also took all of our glasses and strained the seeds. #walangganyansapinas!
